Las Galletas – Diving Capital

A project to make Las Galletas the ‘capital of diving’ is currently being discussed. The idea has attracted considerable interest from various parties, including the son of Jacques Cousteau.

It is said that Pierre Yves Cousteau visited the coastal town to see for himself how a project to safeguard marine life could help revitalise the area. Details were relayed to fishermen, divers and other interested parties when Arona Council held a meeting about its proposal for a ‘capital of diving.’

Arona Town Council has begun working with the Tenerife Cabildo, the Canary Islands’ Government, and Spain to prevent over-fishing. Pierre Yves Cousteau has reportedly shown great interest in the project to preserve the seabed.

Tenerife’s Award-Winning Cheese

The Benijos cheese factory – managed by the Sociedad Cooperativa del Campo La Candelaria since 1997 – proudly received three prestigious awards for its semi-hard cheese varieties as part of the World Cheese Award ceremony, which was held in Birmingham at the end of November.

The cheese factory is located in La Orotava and collects milk from over 130 cows to make eight varieties of cheese under strict quality control rules. Its spectacular semi-smoked cheese was awarded the Gold Medal and a spicy paprika variation won the Bronze Medal.

The World Cheese Awards – an international competition – began in 1987 and is currently organised by the Guild of Cheese in the UK. Each year, the competition is divided into more than 60 categories and every entry is evaluated by a jury consisting of more than 140 experts from around the world.

Facelift for South Airport

The successful food and beverage company – SSP – recently negotiated a new €250million contract with the airport in the south of Tenerife.

The new initiative will include a huge redevelopment programme, involving a massive redesign and the relocation of several establishments.

SSP is planning on using a variety of fun themes and concepts to attract travellers and expects the large project to be completed by summer 2013, creating over 200 jobs in the process.

Many popular brands will be appearing in the airport, including Burger King, Café y Tapas, La Montaña Roja, Caffe Ritazza, Upper Crust, Currywurst, O’Leary’s Sports Bar, SOHO Coffee Co and Café y Té.

Earlier this month, ten leading international Laser teams spent five glorious days sailing around San Miguel marina. The skilled teams were training for the World Sailing Championships, as well as the 2012 London Olympics.

Javier Hernandez – the Tenerife Laser champion – said: ‘These are my friends, and at the Olympics they will be my rivals. But it was a real luxury for me to train on my home island. The island in general and San Miguel marina in particular meet the ideal conditions for training’.

The sports facilities have been built on a plot of 3,182 square metres and have been designed to allow easy-access for pedestrians. They are both well-equipped and installed with high-performance, energy-efficient lighting.

Tenerife Becomes Movie Location Once Again

The Tenerife Tourist Boards announced earlier this week that Tenerife has once again been chosen as the location for a new movie. Film crews arrived on the island earlier this month to shoot scenes in the rugged Mount Teide National Park and the picturesque Adeje coastline for a new film entitled ‘Voice Over’.

The producers made their first visit to the holiday island in spring in search of dramatic scenery for the film. Tenerife’s incredibly diverse landscape has attracted many movie producers over the years and the island has featured in various famous films, such as Clash of the Titans and Planet of the Apes.

<img src="http://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/silverpointcommunity/blog/Tenerife_Update_01.png" alt="Tenerife Roundup" title=""Tenerife Roundup" width="531" height="372" class="size-full wp-image-196" />

Traditional Canarian Festival in Adeje

The traditional Canarian Festival took place in the popular tourist resort of Adeje in the south of Tenerife last week. Every year a fiesta is held in the main street of the area in honour of numerous Canarian saints. This year’s festivities featured even more music, dancing and laughter than the previous years with hundreds of tourists and residents celebrating.

Crowds of locals turned up dressed in traditional Canarian attire to rejoice and enjoy the good food, great company and fantastic atmosphere. Most men arrived dressed in beige or black trousers with matching waistcoat and jacket, a long-sleeved white shirt and Canarian-style hat. The women dressed in white flowing blouses, with several layers of multi-coloured skirts, also with waistcoats and hats.

New Image for San Juan de la Rambla

The quaint fishing town of San Juan de la Rambla revealed new plans to reinvent itself to become more popular with holidaymakers. The local council is currently brainstorming to come up with ideas to make the small coastal town more appealing to tourists. Lots of suggestions have already been made, including creating interesting coastal walks suitable for the whole family and introducing new excursions so people can learn more about the region’s fascinating culture and colourful history.

Top British Athlete in Tenerife

Mo Farah – the British sprinter voted European Athlete of the Year – visited Tenerife last weekend, where he joined up with a group of athletics. The skilled team attended the European Convention of Athletics held at the Magma Centre in Las Americas. An awards ceremony took place during the event, where each of the talented athletes received their medals in front of hundreds of delegates from various athletics unions throughout Europe.

One of Europe’s favourite holiday destinations, Tenerife offers the perfect place to escape and enjoy the sun. However, there is much more to this charming island than most visitors realise.

Tenerife enjoys a very colourful history. Its capital – Santa Cruz – is the location where Admiral Horatio Nelson famously lost his arm in battle. Each year a re-enactment is held in the city – complete with cannons, gunfire and soldiers dressed in full military attire.

As well as a vibrant history, the island boasts many fables and myths. One of the most intriguing tales is the Legend of Atlantis. It claims that Tenerife remains one of the last visible points of the lost city of Atlantis – the rest of which is buried deep below the sea.

One of Tenerife’s most popular attractions, the Dragon Tree in Icod de los Vinos is believed to be the oldest of its kind in the world at the grand age of 650. The bizarrely titled tree was named so because of the liquid secreted when the bark is cut was said to be the dried blood of dragons.

East of Icod de los Vinos is Vilaflor – the highest village in Spain. This picturesque hamlet resides 1,400m above sea level and offers sensational vistas across Tenerife.

Towering above Vilaflor and dominating over the island is the spectacular Mount Teide – the highest peak in Spain at 3,718m above sea level. The volcano and its surroundings comprise the Teide National Park – one of the most visited National Parks in the world.

In Tenerife you will find a variety of attractions and theme parks, including Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz. This zoo houses the world’s largest collection of parrots and does its best to conserve as many species of animals as possible so they avoid extinction.

Towards the south of the island lies Siam Park – a fantastic family water park. This aquatic wonderland boasts Europe’s tallest water slide – The Tower of Power. This thrilling slide features an almost vertical 28m drop which is sure to leave your pulse racing.

The annual carnival held in the capital of the island attracts over 1million tourists to Tenerife every year. Considered to be the second most popular carnival in the world, it features flamboyant outfits, all-night parties in the street and spectacular parades.

It’s not just tourists who are attracted to this beautiful island – film producers are also drawn in by Tenerife’s dramatic scenery. The island has featured in many famous films – such as Clash of the Titans, Star Wars: Episode 3 and Planet of the Apes.

The island has also attracted some special visitors over the years. In July 2005, Former President Bill Clinton visited the Auditorio de Tenerife. This was the first visit by a former US President to the Canary Islands.
So now you know – there is more to Tenerife than meets the eye. Maybe next time you visit the island you will discover even more.

Tenerife has such an ample range of excursions that you’ll be spoilt for choice. So that you can make the most of your time during your stay, here is a list of Tenerife’s top five excursions.

One of the most popular trips in the south of Tenerife is the whale and dolphin trip, which guarantees sightings each time the boat sails. Choose between relaxing onboard an extravagant catamaran whilst the water laps at the sides or glide over the waves on a speed boat in search of pilot whales and bottle-nosed dolphins.

For something a bit more exciting, explore the ocean floor on a submarine or marvel at the exotic fish that swim below on a glass-bottomed boat.

The best place for the whole family to spend an exciting evening is at the Medieval Castle in San Miguel. Stare in awe at the castle’s astonishing towers which stretch into the sky as the Counts regally welcome you into their fortress for an unforgettable evening.

After the authentic medieval banquet comes the highlight of the evening. In a captivating display of horsemanship and heroic acts, knights upon horses battle against each other as you cheer and shout in encouragement.
At the end of the evening, you are invited to enjoy a drink and a dance whilst the Drifters perform.

A trip to Loro Parque – the best zoo in the Canaries – is a must during your stay. Here you can enjoy the comical antics of the sea lions, the amazing acrobatics of dolphins, the incredible bond between orca and trainer and the astonishing intelligence of the parrots in four different shows which are sure to captivate children and adults alike.

Let the kids immerse themselves in their very own park – Kinderlandia – complete with an orca roller coaster, imitation African village, bamboo huts and snake slides, whilst you explore one of the most impressive free flight aviaries in the world – the Katandra Treetops.

For more family fun, a trip to Siam Park is a great day out for everyone. Set in a tropical paradise, this water park offers some of the most exhilarating water slides in the world.

There is a great mixture of adrenaline pumping rides – such as the Tower of Power – and laid-back slides – like the Mai Thai River, so there is something for everyone. Relax on a spectacular white beach complete with swaying palm trees, whilst the kids uncover the secrets of the Lost City.

A trip to Tenerife would not be complete without a visit to the majestic Mount Teide. Drive through the lush natural paradise of Teide National Park which gives way to an alien volcanic landscape on your way to the volcano.

Here you will see red and ochre walls of jagged stone rise up and reveal the magnificent Mount Teide towering over the island. Travel to the summit by cable car where glowing yellow and white smouldering rocks surround the crater. From here, the incredible volcano will award you with spectacular vistas of the other Canary Islands.

With things for all tastes and ages, you’ll be sure to find something to keep everyone happy. From fantastic theme parks to spectacular natural wonders – Tenerife really does have it all.

The Canary Islands enjoy a sub-tropical climate throughout the year with plenty of sunshine and warm weather. The year isn’t divided into the usual seasons – instead the temperature consistently resembles spring and summer. In fact, Tenerife is commonly referred to as the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’ due to its pleasant climate.

Unlike the piercing cold which plagues Northern Europe, the Canaries bask in mild temperatures all year-round. A pleasant 18°C is usual for winter, as is a heavenly 30°C in summer.

This agreeable climate means you can spend relaxing days lounging by the pool, followed by long evenings dining al fresco. This is paradise compared to hurrying home before it gets dark after a stressful day at the office. Instead of struggling through your daily monotonous routine, the Canary Islands invite you to take it easy and soak up the Canarian sunshine.

The Canary Islands are such a popular winter holiday destination because they are blessed with warm temperatures in winter, when the rest of Europe is hit with a piercing chill. This is when most people choose to escape from the short, bleak days and cold, long nights and enjoy a holiday in the Canaries where it’s always spring time.

If you would like to see snow during your winter stay, visit Mount Teide – the third largest volcano in the world. Located in Tenerife, the top of this magnificent volcano is often dusted with a layer of snow between December and February.

The rest of the island also offers a diversity of climates. The south is warm and dry – rainfall is very rare between June and September, whereas the north enjoys a lush, green landscape caused by cooler temperatures and more rainfall.

This diversity of climate allows for a myriad of opportunities during your holiday. You can drive through the picturesque Teide National Park and build snowmen in the forest before heading to the BBQ area to warm up with some toasted marshmallows. By the afternoon, you can be lying on the beach as you top up your tan under the incandescent sun, cocktail in hand.

The rest of the Canary Islands also offer a microcosm of climates. Much like Tenerife, Gran Canaria experiences a slightly damper and cooler climate in the centre of the island and a warmer and drier climate towards the coast.

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are the driest of the Canary Islands and experience around 340 days each year without rain. La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are more prone to tropical rains from time to time and therefore boast a dense forest landscape peppered with wildlife and vegetation.

The Canary Islands provide the perfect place to escape from the bitter, depressing weather at home and instead enjoy the glorious sunshine that will put a smile on your face. Not just a place for sun worshipers, the islands’ assorted climates ensure that there is plenty for everyone to enjoy.
